ALL-NEW 2ND EDITION OF SAVE YOUR HANDS! HELPS
MANUAL THERAPISTS PREVENT INJURY
Body of Work Books, a Florida publishing company, is pleased to announce the publication of the all-new 2nd Edition of Save Your Hands! The Complete Guide to Injury Prevention and Ergonomics for Manual Therapists. The author of the first edition, Lauriann Greene, CEAS, has been joined in this new edition by co-author Richard W. Goggins, CPE, LMP, a certified professional ergonomist and massage therapist with over 17 years experience in occupational health and safety. Janet M. Peterson, PT, DPT has contributed a Foreword and a chapter on physical conditioning to the book. An additional Foreword was contributed by Ben E. Benjamin, PhD.
Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are common among manual therapists. A number of studies have shown high injury rates among physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, hand therapists, chiropractors, and massage therapists. In their study of injury among American massage therapists and bodyworkers, published in Massage and Bodywork in 2006, Greene and Goggins generated the first reliable statistics indicating that musculoskeletal symptoms and injury are common among these practitioners. These studies indicate that MSDs are largely due to the physical demands of the practitioners’ work on their bodies. It is important to note, however, that injury risk factors exist in many professions, and yet many people enter these professions and have long, successful careers in them. The key is learning how to manage these risk factors to prevent injury, and that is the main focus of the 2nd Edition of Save Your Hands!

In an accessible, easy-to-read format using an optimistic, positive tone, Save Your Hands! 2nd Edition gives student and professional manual therapists strategies and tips that have been proven effective in preventing work-related injury. The most effective strategy is multifaceted, so the book includes information on learning proper body mechanics, using the principles of ergonomics to create a healthy workspace and good scheduling practices, addressing emotional issues that increase injury risk, and modifying techniques to reduce stress to the practitioner’s body. An extensive chapter on physical conditioning, with stretches, exercises and workout routines designed specifically for manual therapists by a doctor of physical therapy, is included as another important facet of injury prevention. A discussion of common injuries and the most effective treatment methods for them, including allopathic and complementary approaches, will help those who experience symptoms or injury get back to health (and to work) as quickly as possible. Numerous sidebars and boxed sections offer a wealth of practical advice and tips and make for lively reading.
The valuable information in Save Your Hands! 2nd Edition will also help practitioners better understand and treat their clients’ complaints, since many of their clients see manual therapists to treat their own work-related musculoskeletal disorders.
Save Your Hands! 2nd Edition is 352 pages long, with 17 chapters, 4 appendices, and over 80 photographs and illustrations. ISBN: 978-0-967-9549-1-2.
